With any coffee brewing method having the correct grind is the key to success, get your grind consistency wrong, and you’ll end up with a watery, tasteless cup of Joe. Turkish coffee is even more reliant on that perfect grind, in fact, if you cannot get your coffee ground to a consistency of fine powder, you’ll never be able to brew a real authentic Turkish brew (1).

Forget about your regular coffee grinder, in most cases, they cannot grind your coffee beans fine enough. What you need is a Turkish coffee grinder (or mill) that has been specifically designed to take your whole beans and then turn them into a fine, dust-like powder.

Why Use A Turkish Coffee Grinder?

Because Turkish coffee requires a super fine grind size (even finer than espresso), you need to invest in the best Turkish coffee grinder to get the job done. The extra-fine grind is crucial to brewing a truly authentic cup of Turkish coffee, and it’s this grind that gives the coffee its distinctive body and bold flavor.

Unfortunately, most regular coffee grinders simply cannot achieve this grind so finding the best grinder for Turkish coffee can be frustrating. Thankfully buying a good Turkish coffee grinder won’t break the bank and you can expect to have change out of a hundred dollar bill so you can also get yourself some Turkish coffee beans to go with your grinder.

Extra Fine Turkish Grind

extra fine ground coffeeI’m sure you’ve already got the hint that Turkish coffee requires an extra fine grind. The coffee grinder is the key piece of equipment to get this done; even the best coffee grinders will typically stop at an espresso grind setting.

What you need is a coffee grinder that has a few settings below the espresso setting which will turn your whole beans into a flour-like powder.

In most cases you are better off spending some money on a grinder made just for Turkish coffee, but with that being said there are some manual and regular electric coffee grinders that can achieve the required powder ground coffee (more on those below).

Which Type Of Coffee Beans Are The Best For Turkish Coffee?

By now I’m sure you realize just how important the grind is for a great tasting Turkish coffee, but what about the coffee beans? Do you need special Turkish coffee beans to go with your Turkish coffee grinder?

It’s true that some coffee beans are the preferred choice for Turkish coffee drinkers. You’d think that they would have their own Turkish coffee beans, but this isn’t the case, most prefer beans sourced from Brazil. From my experience, the coffee brand commonly found on the supermarket shelves in and around Istanbul and those used by baristas around the city are the Brazil Santos coffee beans.

You can find coffee beans packaged as Turkish like Mehmet Efendi, but funnily enough, these tend not to be a favorite with coffee drinkers in Turkey. My guess is that the Mehmet Efendi coffee is typically mixed with Robusta beans from South America to keep the costs low and is not 100% Arabica like the Brazil Santos coffee beans, so the taste could be a bit bitter.

Manual vs. Electric Turkish Coffee Grinders

Most of the best Turkish coffee grinders are the manual type, which means you’ll be using a bit of elbow grease to get your whole beans ground down to a fine powder required for a real Turkish cup of Joe. This is the authentic way of doing things, but there are electric Turkish coffee grinders that will get the job done with a simple push of a button.

However, most electric coffee grinders can’t provide enough power needed to turn your coffee beans into fine flour-like powder adequately. This means that most electric powered Turkish coffee grinders are large, I mean huge, they’re more suited to a commercial environment than on your kitchen countertop. These huge coffee grinders will get the job done, but they will do so with a lot of noise and are only designed for grinding large batches of coffee beans.

For the average coffee addict wanting to brew a Turkish coffee at home, I recommend investing in a good manual Turkish coffee grinder. Sure you have to break a sweat for that cup of Joe but all that extra effort with translate over into your final brew (trust me).
