Is Coffee Bad for You? (7 Reasons Why You SHOULD Drink Coffee!)

How many of you have been told that drinking too much coffee isn’t good for your health? I know I have, but is coffee really as bad as all these health gurus make it out to be, well not really. It was once thought (in years gone by) that coffee should be avoided at all costs and people treated coffee as a vice in the same way they do with alcohol or cigarettes.

​However, in recent years, coffee has proven itself to be more beneficial than harmful to your health. Sure, too much of anything is going to bad for you (we all agree on that), but in moderation (4 cups a day), coffee can have some much-needed health benefits.

​Coffee is one of the most popular beverages consumed around the world today, and it's only gaining in popularity. According to the National Coffee Association’s 2013 online survey, 83% of Americans drink coffee every day averaging out at about 2-cups, according to the 2015 Zagat Coffee survey results. Because of coffees’ popularity, there's been a lot of research carried out on this roasted caffeine brew to determine if coffee is actually bad for you.

​So in this article, I’m going to shed some light on why coffee can be bad for you and also why it can be good for you as well. So before you start throwing out your coffee beans read this article FIRST!

​Where did the Idea That Coffee is bad for you Originate?

​The idea that coffee is bad for you most probably stems from the late 70’s and early 80’s where the idea that coffee can be dangerous came about from various studies which were carried out at that time that linked drinking coffee to higher rates of cancer and heart disease.

​Since then the notation that coffee is bad for you has stuck, that is until more recent new coffee studies have since been carried out which now paint a very different picture regarding coffee and its health benefits. However, due to those earlier studies, many people still believe that coffee is actually bad for you when in reality nothing could be further from the truth.

​Benefits of Drinking Coffee

​Drinking coffee can be good for your health, let’s take a look at some of the benefits of drinking coffee.

​1. Coffee is High in Antioxidants

​By far one of the best reasons to drink coffee is due to the vast amounts of antioxidants it contains. In fact, coffee is in the top five highest foods that contain antioxidants in the world today. Not only that, coffee actually provides as much as 70% of the total amount of antioxidants found in people’s diets. Research also shows coffee contains more antioxidants than green tea, black tea, cocoa, and herbal tea.

​Okay, sounds great but what exactly are antioxidants? Every day we are bombarded with high levels of toxicity, whether it be air pollution, toxins in your tap water, or pesticides on our foods (and coffee).

Antioxidants help arm our bodies to fight this toxicity and help protect against free radical damage. Antioxidants also help to slow down the aging process, and in fact, coffee is considered the No. 1 beverage for its effects on anti-aging.

​2. Helps with Physical Activity

​Drinking coffee has been linked to increased endurance, overall physical performance and improves alertness, but this “boost” has been shown to be short lived. Coffee allows athletes to train longer, harder, and at a greater power output.

​3. Helps Protect the Liver

​Drinking coffee contributes to increased circulation which in-turn can help to stimulate the liver. A study out of the Archives of Internal Medicine demonstrated that coffee might protect against alcoholic liver disease.

The study showed that for every cup of coffee a day participants drank there was a 20% reduction in alcoholic liver syndrome.

​4. Supports Cognitive Function

​Drinking coffee can help to support cognitive function by increasing the blood flow to the brain. Coffee and consumption of caffeine have also been shown to work as a natural Alzheimer’s treatment.

​5. Helps Prevent Parkinson’s Disease

​Recent studies have linked coffee consumption with a reduced risk of developing Parkinson’s disease. In fact, developing Parkinson’s decreased as coffee consumption increased from 4-ounces to more than 24-ounces each day.

6. Reduce the Risks of Diabetes

​If you want to prevent developing diabetes drink a regular cup of coffee. Drinking coffee helps to increase sensitivity to insulin (according to a study of lab rats). With an increased insulin response, the overall risk of developing diabetes dropped in the rats.

​Another study was then carried out with decaffeinated coffee, and surprisingly the risk of getting diabetes was also reduced in that study, but it was around 50% lower when compared to regular coffee consumption. This suggests that caffeine and other compounds found in coffee play a vital role in reducing diabetes. 

​7. Coffee is Good for the Teeth (...no really!)

​As crazy as it sounds drinking coffee can actually help prevent cavities from forming. There are lots of beneficial antioxidants and antibacterial properties found in coffee, and this is thought to aid in protecting your teeth against cavities and tooth decay.

​The only downside is you’ll have to deal with the coffee stains on your teeth as a result, but hey, that’s easier to deal with than holes in your teeth, right?

​Risks of Drinking Coffee

​Okay, so you’ve read the benefits of drinking coffee now here are some reasons that show why is coffee bad for you. Just because coffee has some health benefits doesn’t mean that it comes without risks.

​Caffeine has been shown to cause these potential side effects:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Insomnia
  • Nervousness
  • Headache
  • Stomach irritation
  • Agitation
  • Restlessness
  • Anxiety
  • Chest pain

​Most (if not all) of the above side effects are caused by the caffeine found in coffee. So if you enjoy coffee but don’t want so many of the side effects that come with it try switching over to decaffeinated coffee.

​Do the Benefits of Drinking Coffee Outweigh the Negatives?

​The truth when it comes to the questions is coffee bad for you really depends on your body; everyone tolerates caffeine differently. When drinking coffee if you notice that you have any of the above adverse effects you may want to stop or at the very least reduce your coffee intake.

​Coffee is a nice little pick-me-up for those who don’t have any issues when drinking a couple of cups, a day, but just like anything else that tastes great, coffee can be bad for you if you consume too much.

​However, it’s also worth noting that coffee is one of the most highly sprayed plants with pesticides in the world today, so for that reason always try and buy organic, natural coffee wherever possible. I recommend Cafe Don Pablo coffee if you are looking for great tasting organic coffee beans.

​As you can see the health benefits outweigh the risks of drinking coffee, so when someone tells you that coffee is bad for you, simply say YES and NO and direct them to this article.
