Are There Different Size Nespresso Pods?
Yes, but how size works depends on which system you are using, and this is where most people get confused.
On the Original line, the capsule itself only comes in one physical format. The brew size, whether you are pulling a ristretto, an espresso, or a lungo, is controlled by the button you press on the machine, not the pod you insert.
The blend changes, but the capsule format does not.
The Vertuo line takes a different approach. Here, each pod size is a distinct physical format, and there are six of them: Ristretto at 25ml, Espresso at 40ml, Double Espresso at 80ml, Gran Lungo at 150ml, Mug at 230ml, and Alto at 414ml.
Each Vertuo capsule carries a barcode printed around the rim. The machine reads that barcode and automatically adjusts the water temperature, spin speed, and brew volume.
You do not press anything. The pod does the talking.

Why Can’t You Use Vertuo Pods in an Original Machine?
It comes down to both physical design and technology.
Original pods are small and flat-topped. Vertuo capsules are larger, dome-shaped, and built for a spinning extraction system.
Even if you forced one into the wrong machine, the brewing mechanism would not know what to do with it.
The Vertuo system adds another layer to this: the barcode. Every Vertuo capsule has a barcode on its foil lid, and the machine reads it before it does anything. If the barcode is not recognized, the machine will not brew.
This is partly why third-party Vertuo pods do not exist. Nespresso has a patent on the Vertuo capsule design that runs until around 2029, meaning no other company is legally allowed to produce capsules compatible with Vertuo machines.
That is a real restriction if you like shopping around for your coffee.
Original machines do not use this barcode system, which is why the third-party market for Original-compatible capsules is so much larger.
Are All Nespresso Pods the Same When It Comes to Third-Party Options?
No, and the gap between the two systems is significant.
If you own an Original line machine, you have a wide open ecosystem. Brands like Lavazza, Peet’s, and Starbucks all make capsules compatible with Nespresso original machines, and you will find compatible pods at Target, Trader Joe’s, and plenty of specialty roasters.
Reusable capsules are also widely available, letting you fill your own ground coffee and cut the per-cup cost considerably.
Vertuo owners have far fewer options. The only third-party brand currently producing Vertuo line pods is Starbucks, thanks to a specific partnership with Nespresso.
Until the Vertuo patent expires around 2030, you are largely locked into buying directly from Nespresso. Worth knowing before you commit to a machine.
Reusable capsules do exist for the Vertuo system too, but due to the barcode reader, they require a pre-encoded reusable shell rather than a simple refillable pod.
They work, but they add a step.

Both Original and Vertuo capsules are made from aluminum, and Nespresso runs a recycling scheme across both lines.

It is not a perfect system, but it beats sending aluminum straight to landfill.
